“Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

                                                                                   Tolstoy (Anna Karenina)

“Scientific Mother’s” is a collage series designed as a graphic novel. It interprets the last millennium, through the composite lenses of literature, religion, politics, medicine and science. Blending imagery of the mundane with its antithesis, exceptionality, it diagrams history, as it has never been witnessed. 20th Century ideals are manifested in 21st Century culture. These ideals are slain by mankind’s attempts to control every step of human development. The perfect being is spawned by any means available, displaying mankind’s exertion to conceive a super-being in their own image. In order to survive, he must replicate himself in a world where the sheer numbers of people require a self-defensive production mechanism that leads, through exclusion, and the sanctification of process, to failure and sorrow. These closed polarities have left humanity helpless and on the systematic road to extinction.

“Scientific Mother’s” hinges on the contents of six sources of discarded literature found in the basement of a rural library. They are Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, a children’s Bible story book, a book displaying munitions used in WWII, Mother’s Encyclopedia of Illnesses, Scientific American magazines, and a plumbing manual. Each collage contains one or more elements from these sources.

The cover artwork of Scientific Mother’s uses the backdrop of Tolstoy’s first page of the novel Anna Karenina, with Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus. This image is beneath the original page that all the plumbing parts were acquired from.  In a bold comic book stroke, the image of a new-born child, complete with machine-gun umbilical cord and external brain, is the protagonist of the cover, a hybrid of Scientific American, Time and Mad Magazine.”
